Paleochristian Church Mosaic in Antigone Open to Visitors Until August 22

The Antigone Archaeological Park, one of the most important historical sites in southern Albania, welcomes a high number of domestic and foreign visitors during this period.

Its natural surroundings and rich history make the park a top destination for tourists exploring the Drinos Valley.

The Paleochristian Church mosaic in the park remains one of the most visited religious artifacts by tourists choosing this site.

Economy, Culture, and Innovation Minister Blendi Gonxhja announced today that the mosaic will remain open to all visitors until August 22.

The mosaic is located in the southern part of ancient Antigone, on the ruins of a basilica-style religious building dating to the 5th–6th centuries.

The central motif depicts an anthropomorphic figure resembling a woman. Scholars interpret it as representing Saint Christopher, the Christ-bearer.

Antigonea ranks among the largest ancient cities in Albania and served as the most important settlement in the Drinos Valley. Its fortified area from the 3rd century covers 45 hectares, while the archaeological park spans over 90 hectares.

The city takes its name from Antigona, the first wife of King Pyrrhus.

Growing visitor interest in the site provides a positive boost to cultural tourism development in southern Albania.
