New Roads Cut Distances and Boost Safety Across Albania

Investments in road infrastructure have significantly shortened travel times between cities and improved road safety.
Prime Minister Edi Rama shared videos today showcasing key projects like the Llogara Tunnel, Arbër Road, Korçë-Ersekë route, Tirana’s Outer Ring, and the Thumanë-Kashar highway.
He called them “new national roads — a bouquet of infrastructure that shortens distances.”
In March, workers completed the 3.78 km Murriz Tunnel, opening full access to Arbër Road, a vital 74 km east-west corridor.
Then, in May 2025, the Llogara Tunnel opened, easing access to the southern coast — a boost for the tourist season.
In June 2024, the 21 km Thumanë-Kashar highway opened. Part of the Adriatic-Ionian corridor, it allows vehicles to travel at speeds up to 130 km/h, improving traffic flow.
Tirana’s Outer Ring, the city’s largest infrastructure project at 28.7 km, opened on December 30, 2024. It connects the capital to all major national roads.
Finally, the Korçë-Ersekë road cut the distance between the two cities by 35 km over its 45 km stretch.
