Shkodra Remembers 1946 Postriba Uprising Against Communism

On September 9, 1946, Postriba witnessed the first anti-communist uprising in Albania.

Today, officials and citizens gathered at the Monument of the Postriba Uprising. They laid wreaths of flowers and honored the memory of the fighters.

Moreover, the Mayor of Shkodra, Benet Beci, praised the people of the area. He called them freedom-loving and defenders of democracy and development.

The Postriba Uprising was among the first armed movements against communism. The city’s elite, nationalists, and true anti-communists joined forces. Therefore, the uprising carried strong local, national, and political value. It also had the potential to expand into a general revolt.

In fact, around 200 men, led by Jub Kazazi and Osman Haxhia, attacked army barracks and government buildings. However, the attack failed. Soon after, the communist regime launched trials and punishments.

As a result, not only were suspected insurgents prosecuted, but also many clergy and intellectuals of Shkodra.
