Calabria Launches RAI Program in Arbëresh Language

Calabria becomes the first ordinary-statute Italian region to launch a RAI program dedicated to linguistic minorities. The new initiative features TV and radio broadcasts entirely in the Arbëresh language, targeting Calabria’s Arbëresh communities.
Following a recent agreement between the Prime Minister’s Office – Department for Information and Publishing – and RAI, regional and external coordination offices began production.
The content promotes Arbëresh culture and aligns with Law 482/1999 and the National Public Service Contract, both of which protect Italy’s historic linguistic minorities.
Programming kicks off mid-September and runs for 13 months. It aims to enhance and preserve Arbëresh heritage.
“We are the first ordinary-statute region to produce minority language programming. As a Calabrian, I’m especially proud,” said Massimo Fedele, director of RAI Calabria.
“This is an ongoing commitment for both Calabria and RAI, which once again fulfills its role as a public broadcaster.”
Albanian Ambassador to Italy, Anila Bitri Lani, praised the project.
“This is a milestone not only for the Arbëresh people but for all of Italian society and the broader Albanian and Italo-Albanian community.
It’s about communication, preservation, and appreciation of a unique identity, kept alive for centuries across nearly 50 towns.
It strengthens belonging, connects generations, and unites Albanians and Italo-Albanians with the Arbëresh world,” she said.
The TV show premieres on September 21, airing every Sunday with a focus on local Arbëresh communities. On radio, a daily program will explore all aspects of Arbëresh culture.Broadcasts run Monday to Friday, with weekend repeats.
