Albanian Ministry and Port Operator Sign Deal to Restore Historic “Port Walls” Monument

The Ministry of Economy, Culture, and Innovation (MEKI) and the concessionaire company “Porti MBM” signed a cooperation agreement today to restore and maintain the first-category monument “Muret e Portës (Porto Romano),” which dates back to the 6th century AD.

Minister Blendi Gonxhja announced on social media that “Porti MBM” will fund the restoration work and ensure the project meets all preservation standards. This investment will preserve and revitalize the valuable monument, making it accessible to the public and maintaining it through cultural heritage institutions.

Gonxhja called this a major step forward in protecting and promoting Durrës’s rich history and culture.

“We are saving one of the earliest landmarks of Durrës’s urban history and turning it into a living part of our cultural heritage,” Gonxhja said.

Construction of the new hydrocarbon port damaged the symbolic gate area, but the restoration will recover remaining structures, including a tower and fortified wall.
