Excavations Uncover Antigonea’s Ancient Theater

Excavations continue at the Ancient Park of Antigonea, carried out by an Italian-Albanian team that returns each year to deepen the study of this historically significant site.

According to the Italian archaeologists, the park is of particular interest because of its cultural and historical wealth. One Italian archaeologist explained that the team from the University of Macerata has been working here for two weeks and has returned for the fourth consecutive year. This year they are continuing work from last year, completing some excavations and opening new ones, all in the area of the agora. They have uncovered new walls and continued excavations in Sector VIII.

Another Italian archaeologist noted that the work is progressing very well and allows the team to learn something new every day. Meanwhile, the park director, Shkëlqim Guçe, emphasized that the main objective of the excavations is to identify and uncover the ancient theater of Antigonea. He explained that the theater is essential, as archaeological parks or ancient cities typically include an acropolis, an agora, a necropolis, and a theater. In Antigone, the theater has been missing until now.

Excavations are expected to continue for another two weeks, with each new discovery carefully documented to enrich knowledge about this ancient city.
