RTSH Song Festival – A Tradition that Continues to Shape Albanian Music

The Albanian Radio and Television (RTSH) Song Festival remains one of the most important events on the Albanian music scene. It now prepares for its next edition with new surprises and emotions.
Since 1962, the festival has served as a platform to promote Albanian artists. From 2004 onward, it has also selected Albania’s representative for the Eurovision Song Contest.
Conductor and maestro Jetmir Barbullushi underlined the historical and cultural significance of the event during a broadcast on RTSH1. He recalled that in its first years, Albanian families followed the festival with strong emotion through the radio. The festival then turned into a key cultural moment that supported the creation of the Albanian symphony orchestra.
The participation of great masters of music marked those early editions. Their involvement helped establish a professional orchestra and raised the artistic standard of the festival.
In that period, Albania hosted only a limited number of cultural events. As a result, the festival drew exceptional public attention and became a national topic of discussion. It also highlighted the richness of Albanian creativity and tradition, while positioning itself as a counterpart to Europe’s major music festivals.
Today, the RTSH Song Festival continues to preserve its own history while adapting to new times. It stands as both a celebration of music and a cornerstone of Albania’s cultural life.
