Albanian Composer Premieres Canada’s First AI-Integrated Opera

Canada has staged its first opera integrating Artificial Intelligence. The work, Meladramma AI, was composed by Albanian artist Olsa Toqi and premiered at the historic Regent Theatre in Oshawa.
The debut drew long applause. The performance blended real-time AI-generated animations with interactive multimedia elements. Sopranos Lindsay McIntyre, Stephanie DeCiantis, Jonelles Sills, and Reilly Nelson delivered powerful interpretations.
The opera’s concept grew from a discussion between Toqi and Dr. Carolyn McGregor, Dean at Ontario Tech University and NASA collaborator. McGregor suggested the use of AI, turning the project into both an artistic experiment and a research initiative for Ontario Tech students.
The plot reimagines the myth of the apple. Humans bite a robotic apple while robots seek humanity through an organic one. Instead of wearing the shame of Adam and Eve, they shed sin through divine intervention.
The opera unfolds through five pagan-themed arias, a dramatic monologue by Evil, and ends with a triumphant “Hallelujah,” where humans and robots bow together before God.
Albania’s ambassador to Canada, Artemis Malo, attended the premiere, alongside distinguished guests. The production will soon tour Toronto and other Canadian cities.
Meladramma AI follows Toqi’s earlier successes. In 2019, one of her operas premiered at Teatro del Giglio in Lucca, Italy, later traveling to Tirana and Vlora.
