Ministry of Education signs agreement with French Government for bilingual schools in five Albanian cities

The Albanian Ministry of Education and the French government signed a new agreement to expand Albanian–French bilingual sections in schools across Albania. The deal aims to empower students and improve language education quality.

During a meeting with French language teachers in pre-university education, Education Minister Mirela Kumbaro, accompanied by French Ambassador Catherine Suard, highlighted the importance of bilingual schools in Korçë, Durrës, Shkodër, Elbasan, and Tirana. She praised the teachers’ dedication and said learning French gives students a strategic advantage for the future.

Kumbaro said, “All meetings with French teachers, not only in Korçë, Durrës, Shkodër, Elbasan, and Tirana but across the country, show the extraordinary efforts of teachers who prepare students every day.”

She added that French language education creates opportunities for young people. Consequently, it prepares them to study at the Franco-Albanian high school. The school will open in September 2027 with a scientific focus.

Kumbaro explained, “We have extended French education beyond existing schools for children and families who value it. The Franco-Albanian high school will offer dormitories, cafeterias, modern classrooms, and laboratories. French teachers will teach subjects in French, while Albanian teachers will teach national curriculum subjects. This school will provide excellence in education. It will prepare Albanian students as well as students from the region and across Europe.”

Ambassador Catherine Suard said the school will produce young Francophones who will serve as a bridge between Albania and France.

She added, “It is a privilege that our leaders, President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Edi Rama, support this initiative. The Franco-Albanian high school will promote the Europeanization of education and create young Francophones who connect our countries.”

Kumbaro and Suard signed the agreement covering five schools: “Raqi Qirinxhi,” “Gjergj Kastrioti,” “Luigj Gurakuqi,” “Oso Kuka,” and “Asim Vokshi.” Up to 50% of the curriculum in these schools will be taught in French. Students can also earn international French certification through the DELF exam. Additionally, the program supports 20 nine-year schools across Albania under the bilingual system.
