International Volunteer Day, Begaj: A moral pillar that keeps solidarity alive

December 5 marks International Volunteer Day. President Bajram Begaj expressed gratitude on social media for volunteers’ contributions to society.

He described volunteers as the moral pillars that keep social engagement and solidarity alive.

“Today, on International Volunteer Day, I want to honor all volunteers who serve the community unconditionally. You are the moral pillars that sustain social volunteering and solidarity. This day reminds us of the strength of a society built on help and dedication, which are core values of our national character. Respect and gratitude go to every initiative that empowers the community and supports citizens. Keep acting with courage! Albania needs your heart and contribution today and every day,” Begaj writes online.

This year, under the inspiring theme ‘Every Contribution Matters,’ International Volunteer Day gains historic significance. It also marks the official global launch of the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development.

Statistics show around 1 billion volunteers worldwide. About 70% volunteer informally, helping people directly in their communities, while 30% engage through formal organizations.

The day was established by the UN General Assembly in 1985. It honors volunteers worldwide who sacrifice personal interests for the benefit of society and their communities. December 5 provides a unique opportunity to share values and highlight volunteer work across communities, NGOs, UN agencies, government authorities, and the private sector.

Moreover, the UN Volunteers (UNV) program mobilizes thousands of volunteers annually. It contributes to peace and development by recognizing volunteers’ efforts and working with partners to integrate volunteerism into development programs.
