TIRANA, December 8 – President Bajram Begaj commemorated today the 35th anniversary of the December 1990 Student Movement. This event marked a historic moment. It started Albania’s democratic and European path.
In his message, Begaj recalled the call of idealistic students on the streets of Tirana. They shouted: “We want Albania like all of Europe!” He emphasized that the courage and initiative of the youth took the first step toward political pluralism. It also promoted freedom.
Begaj said that every step Albania has taken toward European integration honors the courage and sacrifices of the December ’90 students. They challenged the dictatorial regime. They removed the “iron curtain” that separated Albania from Europe.
He wrote: “Thirty-five years ago today, the call of idealistic students echoed through the streets of Tirana: ‘We want Albania like all of Europe!’
The courage and the youth movement of December ’90 opened the way for a European Albania.
Every step we take on this path honors the youthful courage that dismantled the iron curtain dividing Albania from Europe.”
Begaj concluded that this anniversary is an occasion to remember that freedom and democracy are achievements of youth. They are also the result of civic engagement. He added that Albania’s future depends on respecting and continuing these values.
