Bad weather affects the country – Durrës and Lezha hardest hit, police redirect traffic

TIRANA, January 6 – Heavy rainfall caused flooding and falling debris across the country.

In Durrës, intense rain flooded streets and neighborhoods, making pedestrian and vehicle movement difficult. As a result, authorities temporarily suspended work at the Port of Durrës and closed schools for safety. Some commercial activities also stopped in affected areas.

Meanwhile, on the interurban road connecting Tirana and Durrës, water covered both sides near the fuel station at the city entrance. Police redirected southbound traffic toward Tirana via the southern route and the Rrogozhina–Elbasan–Tirana road. At the same time, vehicles entering Durrës moved via the university road toward Spitalla neighborhood and the Tirana–Elbasan–Rrogozhina road.

Lezha faced similar problems. Heavy inflows overwhelmed the drainage system, flooding the Besëlidhja neighborhood. Consequently, water reached 40 centimeters, blocking building entrances and slowing residents and vehicles. Authorities suspended classes at the nine-year school “Kosova” due to outdoor flooding.

In addition, river inflows rose in the Drin and Gjadër rivers, reaching critical levels. Authorities closely monitored the situation.

In Malësia e Madhe, the village of Kamica remained isolated after the Stream I Thatë overflowed. Meanwhile, in Boga–Theth, snowfall continued overnight.

In Kukës County, falling rocks and debris affected national roads. However, contractors worked continuously to keep all routes passable.

On the Tepelena–Gjirokastër road, falling debris at the “Shkalla e Zezë” section reduced passage to one lane. Police and contractors stayed on site to manage the situation.

Authorities urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and remain alert. At the same time, emergency services continued monitoring conditions.
