The Institute of Geosciences warns high risk of flooding and landslides across Albania

TIRANA, January 7 – The Institute of Geosciences (IGJEO) announced that heavy rainfall will continue this afternoon and tomorrow across Albania. The rains increase the risk of flooding and landslides in several areas.
IGJEO said rivers in the northern and central regions may rise quickly. Mountain streams in Shkodër, Dibër, Lezha, Durrës, Tirana, Elbasan, Fier, Korça, Vlora, and Gjirokastër could overflow. Landslides may occur in vulnerable areas.
Urban areas may face localized flooding depending on drainage conditions. Hydrological calculations indicate that recent and ongoing heavy rains will raise water levels in the Mat, Ishëm, Erzen, and Shkumbin rivers. Meanwhile, the Vjosa River, Drin-Buna rivers, and Lake Shkodër remain at high risk.
IGJEO forecasts heavy rainfall in Shkodër, Dibër, Lezha, Durrës, Tiranë, Elbasan, Fier, Berat, Korça, Vlora, and Gjirokastër. Kukës will see moderate to locally heavy rain. Storms may accompany the precipitation.
In northern, eastern, and southeastern areas above 500 meters, rain may turn into snow. Tomorrow’s temperatures will reach 5–10 °C along the coast, 0–9 °C in lowlands, and -5–4 °C in mountainous zones. Winds will blow moderately to strongly along the coast and in mountain areas.
Authorities urged citizens to stay alert, avoid unnecessary travel in flooded areas, and follow instructions from local emergency services.
