Tropoja wind park, PM Rama: Ready within 12 months, step toward Albania’s energy sovereignty

TIRANA, January 12 – Prime Minister Edi Rama said today that the Tropoja wind energy park will join the renewable energy grid within 12 months. He described the project as the result of a two-year joint effort with the company managing preparations.

Rama added that he expects the project to proceed as planned. He emphasized that the wind park will strengthen Albania’s energy sovereignty.

He recalled that Albania has long relied almost entirely on hydroelectric power. During periods of low rainfall, the country had to purchase expensive electricity abroad. Conversely, he said, abundant rainfall often caused the water’s potential value to be lost and, in some cases, generated damage.

Rama stressed that Albania is approaching the end of its dependency on external energy. He noted that the country will join the small group of nations that enjoy full energy production independence.

At the same time, he highlighted that hydroelectric power will remain the main production source. Meanwhile, solar and wind energy are gradually gaining a larger role. He added that, according to the “Albania 2030” vision, renewable sources will account for 30% of total energy production by the end of the decade.

Rama concluded that this share will ensure self-sufficiency and allow Albania to export any surplus energy.
