Deputy PM Balluku: Albanian section of power line with North Macedonia almost ready

TIRANA, January 12 – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Belinda Balluku, emphasized today the strategic role of transmission lines and energy interconnections.
She spoke during the presentation of the Tropoja wind farm. Prime Minister Edi Rama and U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Nancy VanHorn attended the event.
Balluku said Albania has invested heavily in developing the national transmission network. As a result, the country now connects its energy system with all neighboring states.
She added that the Albanian section of the power line with North Macedonia is almost finished. Meanwhile, she expressed confidence that the North Macedonian side will accelerate work to ensure the line becomes operational quickly. This step will secure the continuity of Corridor 8.
According to Balluku, Albania ranks among the best-connected countries in the region. She noted that this connectivity gives foreign investors strong guarantees for wind and solar projects. Consequently, investors can access both the Balkan and European energy markets.
In addition, Balluku said transmission investments aim to strengthen the domestic network and create new strategic links with Europe. She explained that Albania is constructing an underwater cable to directly connect with Italy. This project will position the country as a regional energy hub.
She also highlighted that international organizations and partners have recognized Albania’s energy developments. The sector shows strong progress toward European integration. Balluku noted that Albania ranks among the top countries globally in energy sustainability. The sector also performs positively in the European Commission’s 2026 progress report.
Balluku added that the investments include studies of new technologies. These include hydro pumps for the Drin cascade and the Moglica hydropower plant. She stated that these developments are expected to increase national energy capacity by around 1,600 MW.
Finally, Balluku stressed that clear policies and sustained investments in transmission and market integration provide security for investors. She concluded that they also guarantee long-term growth in the Albanian energy sector.
