Rama in Abu Dhabi: We aim to serve Europe with green energy

Prime Minister Edi Rama said today that Albania will become fully energy sovereign by the end of 2028. The country will stop importing electricity.

Rama spoke at the Sustainable Development Week summit in Abu Dhabi. President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan hosted the event.

Speaking about energy investments, Rama said Albania is “fortunate.” He noted that the country has rich hydropower resources and produces 100 percent renewable energy.

“We rank at the top,” he said. “But hydropower depends on nature. That is why we still need imports.”

For this reason, the government has invested heavily in solar and wind energy over the past decade.

“We want a balanced energy portfolio,” Rama said. “We want to end imports and become fully sovereign with 100 percent green energy. The plan is moving well. By the end of 2028, we will no longer buy energy from abroad.”

The prime minister praised the strategic partnership with the United Arab Emirates in the energy sector. He highlighted the trilateral agreement with the UAE and Italy.

“Through the interconnection cable with Italy, we aim to supply Europe with green energy,” Rama said. “Together with our Arab partners, we also aim to sell energy to Europe. The project exceeds one billion euros.”
