PM Rama: EU integration laws must be adopted without delays

TIRANA, January 16 – Prime Minister Edi Rama spoke after the Socialist Parliamentary Group meeting about Albania’s EU accession. He stressed that the country must meet EU criteria and adopt all laws agreed with the European Commission. In the past, some EU-related laws were delayed or treated lightly. Rama warned that once a draft is approved through negotiations with the Commission, Assembly must adopt it without internal debate.

He explained that negotiating a law is a formal process within the EU legal framework. The government implements agreements, and Assembly votes on them. “When a goes to Assembly, it is not for discussion. Debating it would imply questioning whether we want to join the EU, which is not the case,” Rama said.

Rama also noted that some MPs refer to practices in other EU countries. He clarified that the integration process is standardized and binding. “Early EU members joined with fewer conditions. Later members faced stricter requirements. We must follow the rules and meet all obligations to succeed,” he added.
