Myth and Modernity Collide: “Shadow – Euridika Thotë!” Mesmerizes Tirana

The drama “Shadow – Euridika Thotë!” reappeared this weekend, enchanting audiences in the capital. Presented by the Experimental National Theater “Kujtim Spahivogli,” in collaboration with the Austrian Embassy in Tirana and the Ministry of Economy, Culture, and Innovation, the play brings a fresh perspective on an ancient myth.

Written by Nobel laureate Elfriede Jelinek and directed by Austrian Sabine Mitterecker, the production features performances by Adriana Tolka, Albana Koçaj, and Flobensa Bazaiti.

The story reimagines the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, exploring what happens when Eurydice refuses to return to life or to be seen merely as a symbol of Orpheus’s love. Through this lens, Jelinek challenges traditional narratives, offering a bold and thought-provoking take on love, identity, and agency.

Since winning the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2004, Jelinek has shifted her focus from novels to theatrical works, allowing her to respond more dynamically to current events. Alongside her plays, she continues to publish essays on contemporary issues, reinforcing her position as one of literature’s most incisive voices.
