EU provides 171 million euros for infrastructure and business in four Western Balkan countries

TIRANA, January 28 – The European Commission announced 171 million euros to boost infrastructure and private sector growth across Western Balkan partners.
The package combines several EU financing sources. IPA III contributes to a project in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Meanwhile, bilateral donors through the Western Balkans Investment Fund (WBIF) support a project in Montenegro. In addition, the Reform and Growth Facility (RGF) funds projects in Albania, Montenegro, and North Macedonia.
The European Commission allocated 91.8 million euros for infrastructure projects in the four countries. This funding is expected to trigger 232 million euros in total investments for seven priority projects. These projects focus on digital energy, clean energy, human capital, transport, and the environment.
Key projects include expanding broadband internet in Albania. At the same time, North Macedonia will improve its electricity transmission system. In North Macedonia and Montenegro, authorities will construct and renovate educational facilities to increase energy efficiency. Albania will electrify the Durrës-Tirana railway line. Bosnia and Herzegovina will improve water treatment for drinking water and wastewater.
Western Balkan partners will carry out these projects together with international financial institutions.
In addition, the package provides 2.9 million euros for four technical assistance projects in Albania and Bosnia and Herzegovina. They aim to support future investments in energy, water, innovation, and research.
Finally, the package includes 76.3 million euros in contributions for programs that strengthen the private sector.
