Congress of Manastir: A Celebration of Albanian Linguistic Identity

The National Center for Books and Reading (QKLL) organized the event “The Congress of Manastir and Linguistic Identity” at the Faculty of Foreign Languages to mark the Day of the Albanian Alphabet. Attended by QKLL Director Alda Bardhyli, linguist Xhevat Lloshi, and Dean Prof. Dr. Esmeralda Kromidha, the event highlighted the Congress’s role in unifying the Albanian language and adopting a standardized alphabet.

The Congress of Manastir, held from November 14-22, 1908, addressed the unification of the Albanian alphabet under the leadership of Mid’hat Frashëri, Gjerasim Qiriazi, and Luigj Gurakuqi. It culminated in the adoption of the Latin alphabet proposed by the “Bashkimi” Society, a decision that solidified Albanian national and cultural identity.

The event underscored the Congress’s lasting impact, now celebrated annually as the Day of the Alphabet.
