Gonxhja: Mosaic exhibition showcases valuable evidence of Albania’s cultural heritage

The Tirana Mosaic is one of Albania’s archaeological treasures. It preserves fragments of our ancient history.

Blendi Gonxhja, Minister of Economy, Culture, and Innovation, said the monument will display mosaics from both classical and late antiquity periods. These mosaics come from Albania’s most important archaeological sites.

“Currently, the National Institute of Cultural Heritage is cleaning, conserving, and preparing the materials and finds from the 2021 excavations. Soon, we will exhibit them to the public. This work will bring valuable evidence of our cultural heritage closer to everyone,” Gonxhja said.

The Tirana Mosaic dates back to the 3rd century. Archaeologists discovered it in the 1970s during construction of a residential block.

The authorities transformed the mosaic area into a modern space. It now serves as a platform to showcase Albania’s most important mosaics. Consequently, it is becoming a key cultural destination for Tirana.

Through optimal conservation and educational programs for children and youth, the space offers a new window into contemporary interpretations of Albania’s archaeological heritage.

In addition to its historical value, the building provides a visual information point about Albania’s rich underground mosaic sites.

Moreover, the prestigious architecture magazine ArchDaily nominated the Tirana Mosaic for the “Building of the Year 2026” award.
