79th Anniversary of the Founding of Writers’ Association Celebrated

On October 7, 1945, the Writers’ Association was established in Tirana.

The General Directorate of Archives recalls that two years later, in 1947, the Artists’ Association joined this body, thus uniting the literary figures with the artistic community of the country.

In its early days, the Writers’ Association had 70 members, which included journalists and linguists as well. Subsequently, their number continued to grow. Sejfulla Malëshova was elected as its chairman, while the honorary position of president was entrusted to Fan Noli. According to the statute of the Writers’ Association, no writer, publicist, or journalist who had served the occupier with their works and was considered an enemy of the people would be accepted as a member.

Some of Malëshova’s successors at the helm of LSHA included Dhimitër Shuteriqi, Dritëro Agolli, Bardhyl Londo, Xhevahir Spahiu, and Limos Dizdari, among others.

The Writers’ Association had its own literary and artistic organs, such as the magazine “Literatura jonë,” later known as “Our Literature” (1947), followed by the monthly magazine “November” (1954), the weekly publication “Light” (1961), the French-language magazine “Les Lettres Albanaises” (1978), “Literary World,” “Literary Magazine,” and others.
