Albania marks Sultan Nevruz, Bektashi community’s most important celebration

TIRANA, March 22 – The Bektashi community in Albania celebrates Sultan Nevruz on March 22, a day symbolizing spiritual renewal, hope, and the birth of Imam Ali. The observance highlights the arrival of spring, revival, and aspirations for a better future. The event draws both believers and the wider public, reflecting Albania’s tradition of religious tolerance and coexistence.

Bektashism arrived in Albania in the 15th and 16th centuries and has shaped the country’s cultural and spiritual life. Followers are mainly in southern Albania, with communities also in Kosova and North Macedonia. The Bektashi World Centre, located in the north-eastern suburbs of Tirana, serves as the global headquarters of the order since 1929.

The World Centre includes a large tekke, a museum on Bektashism worldwide, and the turba, the tombs of past Babas, the highest clerics of the order. During Nevruz, the site hosts local craft stalls, folk music, polyphonic singing, traditional dances, and cultural presentations. Visitors can explore the museum, admire the marble mosaics, or participate in symbolic rituals honoring Imam Ali.

Ceremonies begin with the Albanian national anthem, highlighting the community’s historical link to national identity. Poetry, songs, and speeches celebrate nature and Albanian culture. Baba Edmond Brahimaj addresses attendees, explaining Imam Ali’s significance and offering prayers for peace, unity, and prosperity. The celebration concludes with traditional lamb sandwiches, drinks, and sweets.

Sultan Nevruz in Albania represents spiritual renewal, cultural identity, and the Bektashi community’s enduring contribution to the country’s social and religious life.
