The EU Ambassador to Albania, Silvio Gonzato, attended today the National Forum for Local Democracy, supported by Switzerland and Sweden.

First, the forum brought together local government representatives, international partners, civil society, and other key actors. They exchanged best practices and worked to strengthen local democracy across the country.

Next, the ambassador stressed the importance of municipalities. He said they are essential not only for delivering services, but also for ensuring democratic representation. Therefore, local government must be strengthened.

Furthermore, he explained what this requires. It needs clear competencies, sufficient resources, and strong dialogue between central and local government.

Finally, he highlighted the role of local governance in EU integration.
“Local government is a key partner in turning European policies into real results for citizens. Much of EU legislation and public investment is implemented at local or regional level. Therefore, reforms must strengthen local capacities, improve service delivery everywhere, and increase democratic participation,” Gonzato said.
