A book about the order of the Bektashi dervishes in Albania was written by Robert Elsie

Robert Elsie’s book, “The Albanian Bektashis: History and Culture of a Dervish Order in the Balkans”, is dedicated to exploring the Bektashi dervish order in Albania and its significant role in the nation’s history.

The book is structured into four core sections.

The first section provides a concise overview of the history and culture of the Albanian Bektashis, serving as an introduction to the topic. It is designed to be accessible to the general reader, while still offering sufficient detail to satisfy the more scholarly audience.

This is followed by a more extensive section, which presents a collection of writings on the Albanian Bektashis by early travelers and eminent scholars.

This section includes key articles that examine Bektashi studies from a variety of perspectives, offering valuable insights.

The third section offers a detailed catalog of the major teqe (monasteries) and tyrbe (shrines) of the Albanian Bektashis, arranged alphabetically by location. Each entry, where possible, provides historical context on its origin, development, and significance.

This catalog is not exhaustive, as many smaller shrines and teqe are excluded due to insufficient data. Readers will observe that for some teqe, the coverage is relatively comprehensive, while for others, there are notable gaps—reflecting the current state of Bektashi research.

The fourth section is a catalog of the most prominent historical and legendary figures associated with the Albanian Bektashis.

In addition, the book includes a glossary of key terms and a bibliography, enabling readers to pursue further research in this area should they wish to delve deeper.
