Express: Tirana emerges as Europe’s top budget city break

TIRANA, April 3 – Tirana, the capital of Albania, is emerging as a top budget-friendly city break in Europe. Temperatures reach 21 degrees Celsius in April, offering visitors warm spring weather. Direct flights from the UK start from just £14.99, making the city accessible to many travelers, Jennifer Pinto reports in the British daily Express.

Tourists often flock to Albania’s beaches, but Tirana is gaining attention for urban tourism. In 2025, Time Out named Tirana the best European city for budget travel, surpassing destinations like Zagreb, Krakow and Sarajevo. Airlines such as Ryanair offer direct flights from London Stansted, while Wizz Air and other low-cost carriers serve Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, Liverpool and Manchester.

The city presents a rich mix of sights within a compact area. Visitors can explore Ottoman-era mosques, communist-era bunkers, vibrant street art, lively markets, and scenic mountain views. Key attractions include Skanderbeg Square, the colorful Blloku neighborhood, Et’hem Bey Mosque, the National History Museum, Bunk’Art 1 and 2, Mount Dajti, Grand Park, the Pyramid, Pazari i Ri, and extensive street art.

Food in Tirana combines quality with affordability. Traditional dishes such as byrek, fërgesa, baked yogurt casserole, grilled meats, and fresh seafood cost little. A pint of local beer is just £2.20. Travel blogger Sam Dawson calls Tirana “Europe’s most underrated capital.” A TripAdvisor expert highlights the city’s transformation from a gray past to a lively, modern urban space. Skanderbeg Square reflects this change, linking Tirana’s historical challenges with its vibrant future.

Tirana now offers travelers a unique city experience. With accessible flights, low prices, cultural landmarks and colorful streets, the capital is poised to become a must-visit destination for budget-conscious tourists.
