Rama: Albania Must Focus on Innovation in Agriculture

Prime Minister Edi Rama visited the new experimental farm at the “Mihal Shahini” vocational school in Cërrik. The project combines modern agriculture with vocational education.

The farm operates with support from MASHAV, the Israeli Embassy in Albania, and Albania’s Ministry of Agriculture.

The project promotes sustainable and modern farming. Students and farmers learn new cultivation and management methods through practical training.

The farm includes modern greenhouses, smart climate systems, hydroponic cultivation, livestock facilities, irrigation systems, and training spaces for local and international experts.

Rama praised Israel for its innovation in agriculture. He said Israel created successful solutions despite difficult geographic conditions.

He stressed that Albania has many natural resources. However, he said the country lacked strong focus on innovation and modern experience for many years.

“This looks like a small garden, but it is the heart of an experimental farm,” Rama said.

Rama also highlighted cooperation with BOKU University, one of Europe’s leading agricultural universities.

He said the Agricultural University of Tirana aims to align its programs with BOKU by the end of the decade. Students could then receive equivalent diplomas.

Rama noted growing interest among young people in agricultural studies. He said old stereotypes about farming and rural life are disappearing.

He added that technology and innovation will help reduce costs, improve sustainability, and protect the environment.

Rama also announced plans for a new agreement with Israel. The deal will deepen cooperation and bring more agricultural knowledge and expertise to Albania.
