Rama: Europe Must Talk to Putin, Diplomacy Remains Essential

Edi Rama called on Europe to strengthen its defense capacities while preserving its democratic values and identity. He made the remarks during the Lennart Meri Conference in Estonia.

First, Rama said Europe should stop focusing only on U.S. President Donald Trump. Instead, he urged European leaders to focus on building a stronger and more competitive Europe.

Moreover, Rama stressed that Europe must protect its common market, develop technology, and support artificial intelligence. At the same time, he said Europe should remain a global soft power.

In addition, Rama argued that Europe must maintain direct communication with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He clarified that diplomacy does not weaken support for Ukraine. On the contrary, he said Europe can support Ukraine and still keep diplomatic channels open.

Furthermore, Rama described diplomacy as a necessity during conflicts. He warned that Europe should avoid isolation and continue political dialogue, even in difficult times.

Meanwhile, Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal responded that Europe should not seek its security through the Kremlin. He said Putin remains the core problem for European stability.

However, Rama clarified his position. He said Europe should not rely on Russia for security. Instead, he insisted that communication remains necessary because Russia will continue to be part of Europe’s geopolitical reality.

Finally, Rama questioned why European leaders communicate indirectly with Moscow through Washington. He argued that direct diplomatic engagement is more effective.
