Minister of Economy and Innovation presents Albania’s priorities for Central European Free Trade Agreement 2026 presidency in Brussels

TIRANA, May 28 – Minister of Economy and Innovation Delina Ibrahimaj presented Albania’s priorities for the 2026 presidency of the Central European Free Trade Agreement at a ministerial meeting in Brussels. The focus was regional economic integration and gradual alignment with the European Union single market.

She said Albania’s role follows confirmation of the country’s fulfilment of interim standards under Cluster 1, “Fundamentals”, during the 8th EU accession conference. This development opens the way for the closing of advanced technical negotiation chapters, including Chapter 30 on international trade.

At the same time, Ibrahimaj highlighted the Central European Free Trade Agreement (CEFTA) as a key platform for preparing the region for integration into the European Union single market, in line with the Western Balkans Growth Plan and the Regional Common Market Action Plan 2025–2028.

In addition, she presented Albania’s priorities for its 2026 presidency of the Central European Free Trade Agreement. These include reduced border waiting times, stronger digital infrastructure, deeper alignment with European Union standards, and improved institutional coordination.

She also stressed initiatives such as SEED+ and Green Lanes. She added support for harmonised border crossing schedules and possible 24/7 operations at selected strategic border points.

Meanwhile, Albania reaffirmed support for mutual recognition of electronic signatures, electronic seals, and product testing results. The aim is to reduce paper-based procedures and increase digital trade in the region.

Finally, Ibrahimaj underlined the importance of recognising professional qualifications. She said this would ease labour mobility and expand economic opportunities across the region.
