Competition launches plan to transform Palace of Congresses into modern multifunctional hub in Tirana

TIRANA, June 2 – Five finalist teams in the International Competition for the requalification of the Palace of Congresses presented their architectural proposals before the jury. The process aims to transform one of Tirana’s landmark buildings into a modern multifunctional centre.

The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports, Blendi Gonxhja, spoke at an event attended by the Prime Minister. He said the project marks an important moment for Tirana’s development and for adapting public infrastructure to new national realities. Earlier, he recalled that construction of the building began in 1982 along the “Dëshmorët e Kombit” boulevard and reflected a different political and social context.

He said the venue has hosted festivals, fairs, exhibitions, summits and cultural events over time. However, he noted that the current structure no longer meets functional requirements, including underground parking and dedicated services.

At the same time, Gonxhja said Albania is now an open country, close to European Union membership and integrated into global tourism flows. He stressed that this shift requires a modern venue capable of hosting international events.

He added that the future centre should host congresses, summits, exhibitions and artistic events. It should also serve as a platform for Albanian talent and international exchange.

In addition, he underlined that the design should combine tradition with innovation and functionality with architectural quality. He also said it should strengthen the cultural and economic value of the area. Gonxhja said international participation in the competition reflects confidence in Tirana’s development potential.
