“Antiquity Mosaic” Exhibited at Rozafa Castle Museum

The Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage in Shkodër shared insights on the “Antiquity Mosaic” across social media platforms.

The mosaic comprises 24 fragments, yet only 8 of them are displayed at the Castle Museum. It was unearthed in October 1977 and is also known as the Bahçallëk Mosaic.

The discovery took place on the right bank of the Drin River, 100 meters east of the old Bahçallëk Bridge, north of the road leading from the bridge to the Lead Mosque. The mosaic emerged as part of a building with a social character, the first of its kind discovered in the city of Shkodër.

Excavations conducted in 1978-1979 extended to an area with a territory of over 400 square meters, revealing that the structure was part of a micro-settlement of the Illyrian city of Shkodër erected between the 4th and 6th centuries AD, with a significantly intensive social life.

Previously, as part of the “Mosaic Week” initiative, the Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage in Shkodër and the municipality organized a workshop involving 9th-grade students who were introduced to the history and culture of the ancient period through the recognition of the mosaic as a traditional art of the time.
