Durana Tech Park Gains International Recognition as Plans Advance for Physical Development

Durana Tech Park is entering a new phase of development. The park has gained international recognition for its innovative business model and is now preparing to build its physical infrastructure in Albania.
Currently, the park hosts 88 companies and is evaluating five more. Of the resident companies, 52% have foreign capital, while the park supports around 750 jobs.
Meanwhile, the International Association of Science Parks and Areas of Innovation (IASP) has selected Durana as a successful model for presentation at its 43rd World Conference in Cannes, France, from 27 to 30 October 2026. The event gives Albania an opportunity to showcase its approach to technology and innovation to an international audience.
At the same time, Durana is preparing to develop its physical infrastructure in Xhafzotaj, in the Municipality of Shijak. As part of this process, project representatives held the first public consultation on 26 October to discuss the Strategic Environmental Assessment of the development plan.
The proposed project covers around 14 hectares. It aims to bring technology, scientific research, innovation and entrepreneurship together in one integrated hub. Furthermore, long-term plans include exploring opportunities to expand the wider Durana Innovation District.
However, the development must also address its potential environmental impact. For this reason, the consultation focused on biodiversity, natural habitats, land use, air and water quality, waste management and noise pollution.
The meeting brought together representatives of government institutions, local authorities, businesses, academic institutions, the World Bank and the local community. Their feedback will help identify potential environmental risks and guide the next stages of planning.
Following this first consultation, the process will continue with a second public meeting. The authorities will then prepare the final environmental assessment before the Ministry of Environment issues the environmental declaration. Meanwhile, interested institutions, residents and other stakeholders can submit comments and recommendations until 5 November 2026 at [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]).
The World Bank Group is providing technical support for the project. In addition, the International Finance Corporation (IFC) has selected Durana as a pilot project under an initiative to develop eco-industrial parks across the Western Balkans, with support from the European Union through the Western Balkans Investment Framework.
Ultimately, the shift from a virtual operating model to physical infrastructure marks a new chapter for Durana Tech Park. The project aims to strengthen Albania’s innovation sector while ensuring that economic development goes hand in hand with environmental protection, public consultation and sustainable growth.
