USA Today: Albania offers authentic and affordable alternative for European travel

TIRANA, July 2 – Albania ranks among the Balkans’ most attractive destinations for travellers seeking an authentic and affordable European experience, according to a feature published by the American newspaper USA Today.

The publication highlights Albania alongside Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina for their natural landscapes, cultural diversity and strong value for money. It says the region offers visitors the chance to discover less crowded destinations before mass tourism expands further.

Citing travel experts, USA Today reports that Albania has become a standout destination. Lee Thompson, co-founder and marketing director of adventure travel company Flash Pack, said bookings by American travellers for Albania rose 300% in 2025. He described the country as a hidden European gem that offers the atmosphere of Greece before it became a mainstream tourist destination.

The article also notes that Albania combines lower travel costs with mountains, beaches and UNESCO-listed sites. Travel content creator Sara Campana told USA Today that visitors can easily explore castles, historic towns and local culture, while transport across Albania and the wider Balkans remains convenient and affordable.

According to the report, Tirana serves as an ideal base for exploring the country by rental car. USA Today adds that Albania’s improving infrastructure, growing hospitality sector and diverse landscapes continue to strengthen its appeal for international visitors.
