Director Genc Përmeti Explores Dictatorship and Propaganda in New Film “Leaving Eden”

Albanian director Genc Përmeti presents his latest film, Leaving Eden, a post-apocalyptic drama that explores dictatorship, propaganda, inherited hatred and the search for freedom.

Set 60 years after a nuclear apocalypse, the film follows 10-year-old Niko, who grows up with his grandfather Leksi and believes that enemies exist beyond their territory. However, his world changes when Xeni, a young Roma boy, arrives with his family and challenges the beliefs that shaped Niko’s childhood.

Through this powerful story, Përmeti shows how fear, education and propaganda can influence generations. Moreover, the film examines how authoritarian regimes create the idea of a constant enemy and use fear to maintain control.

The director also draws from his own experience of growing up in communist Albania. As a result, he transforms personal memories into a wider reflection on dictatorship, historical trauma and the importance of breaking cycles of hatred.

Furthermore, Përmeti filmed Leaving Eden in northern Albania, where industrial sites and natural landscapes create a dark and symbolic atmosphere. Meanwhile, composer Andrea Guerra’s soundtrack strengthens the film’s emotional impact.

The movie features performances by Agata Buzek, Nikolla Prendi, Kristaq Pilo, Ksawery Szlenkier and Daniel Olbrychski.

Finally, Leaving Eden reached Italian critics and media representatives on June 30 during a special screening at the historic Azzurro Scipioni cinema in Rome. After the screening, Përmeti joined acclaimed Italian director Daniele Vicari for a discussion about the film’s themes, symbolism and artistic vision.
