The ancient theater of Orikum Archaeological Park, rare features for the theaters of the ancient world

The ancient theater in the archaeological park of Orikum represents one of the most monumental buildings discovered in Orikum. The monument dates back to the beginning of the 3rd century BC and presents some rare characteristics for the theaters of the ancient world.
The theater staircase partly rested on the slope of the rocky hill and partly was built with radial walls. Only the first row of seats, located on a podium, reserved for the city’s elite, has been fully preserved from the theater.
The orchestra space was paved with large stone slabs, while the stage was decorated with colonnades and semi-columns.
This is one of the smallest ancient theaters known to date in Albania, with a capacity of around 500-600 spectators.
Considering the features of this theater, it is thought that it may have played an important role in the religious ceremonies and processions of the city too.
