Next NATO summit in Tirana highlights Albania’s strategic role

TIRANA, July 22 – Defence Minister Ermal Nufi said the decision to hold the next NATO summit in Tirana marks a strategic milestone for Albania and reflects the alliance’s confidence in the country’s contribution to collective security.

Speaking at a press conference, Nufi said NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte confirmed during the latest NATO summit that Tirana will host the next meeting of allied leaders. He added that NATO will determine the dates and organisational details. Meanwhile, he said the decision recognises Albania as a reliable ally and highlights its role in promoting regional and international stability.

Nufi also said the global security environment has changed significantly because of the war in Ukraine, conflicts in other regions, cyber threats, hybrid warfare and rapid technological advances in defence. As a result, he described the alliance as “NATO 3.0,” focused on readiness, stronger capabilities and rapid responses to emerging threats. He added that NATO’s first phase centred on deterrence during the Cold War, while the following period focused on crisis management.

In addition, Nufi said Albania is adapting to the new security environment by increasing investment in defence and security. He said the country continues to strengthen military capabilities, modernise the Armed Forces, develop defence technologies and reinforce strategic and cyber defence structures.
