Quartz: Gjirokastër, Berat and Lake Ohrid rank among Europe’s hidden travel gems

TIRANA, July 22 – American media outlet Quartz has included Gjirokastër, Berat and Albania’s Lake Ohrid shoreline among Europe’s most attractive alternative travel destinations, highlighting their cultural heritage, authenticity and affordability.
In an article by Cris Tolomia, Quartz says the selected destinations combine natural beauty, rich history and lower travel costs while avoiding the overcrowding that affects many of Europe’s best-known tourist cities. The publication notes that rising prices in destinations such as Venice, Amsterdam and Barcelona are encouraging travellers to seek less crowded alternatives.
According to Quartz, Gjirokastër and Berat stand out for their well-preserved Ottoman architecture and UNESCO World Heritage status. Gjirokastër features its distinctive stone houses, medieval castle and historic bazaar, while Berat, known as the “City of one above the other windows,” offers historic neighbourhoods, a centuries-old inhabited fortress and the Onufri Iconographic Museum.
Meanwhile, the publication also highlights Albania’s Lake Ohrid coast for its unique natural environment and cultural significance. It notes that the ancient lake, shared with North Macedonia, offers visitors opportunities for swimming, boating and exploring one of Europe’s oldest freshwater ecosystems.
Quartz adds that these destinations continue to offer authentic local experiences and competitive prices, although travel experts warn that growing international interest could gradually change their character.
