Archaeological excavations in Korça – Studies are needed in settlements of the Iron Age

The Iron Age and the Bronze Age in Albania represent two of the most important periods of Albanian prehistory as the formation of the Illyrian ethnos begins. Until the 1950s, these eras were little known due to the lack of systematic tracing in this field of studies. The archaeological materials were limited and often not accompanied by certain indications regarding the place of finding and the circumstances of their discovery.

“In addition to dwellings, they also come from cemeteries, the earliest settlements of the Iron Age are Trajan’s castle, the Iron Cave, we have Drenova, a typical unit of the Iron Age,” said the head of the museum, Dorian Kallanxhi.

Kallanxhi says that there is a need for further excavations regarding this period, mainly in the settlements, as it is known mostly from the mound culture.

The Iron Age ranges from 1100 to 500 years BC. This period is characterized by fortified settlements and mounds.
