Saint Anne’s Church, cultural monument of the first category

The Church of St. Anne above the village of Dervician dates back to the 16th century and is a cultural monument of the first category, but little known by visitors.

The regional directorate of Cultural Heritage of Gjirokastër informs on this cultural monument.

The Church of Saint Anne is built on a high plateau above the village of Dervician, in a territory filled with the ruins of an early settlement. The church is small with internal dimensions of 4.5m x 2.9m, but of interest in terms of its structural construction. It is in the form of a hall covered with a cylindrical vault. On the longitudinal walls, there are pilasters, which are connected by arches on both sides. Transverse arches serve as ribs for the stability of the vault, while longitudinal ones serve to support the vault, creating niches in the northern and southern walls.

The altar area is divided by a wall iconostasis, which has two entrances and two places of large icons. The apse comes out in a circular shape. The lighting is poor and comes from small open windows over the west door and in the apse.

The slope of the ground on which the church stands has facilitated the construction of a semi-recessed church. It has a square shape with a column in the middle, which is connected to the perimeter walls with arches, creating four square cores, two of which are covered with domes, while the other two have cylindrical vaults.

The masonry is built with layered stones, with a regular placement. The church is stripped of all decorative processing. The only decorative elements are the niche above the door and the double window above it, covered with brick arches.
