The Independent ranks the Accursed Mountains in northern Albania among Europe’s top summer escapes

TIRANA, August 26 – The British newspaper The Independent has included Albania’s Accursed Mountains, in the country’s north near the borders with Kosova and Montenegro, among Europe’s top mountain destinations for a summer escape. The selection comes as heatwaves and wildfires push tourists towards cooler destinations, the newspaper reported.

Travel experts highlighted mountain destinations across Europe that offer hiking and outdoor activities beyond the traditional ski season. They included the Accursed Mountains in northern Albania, alongside destinations in France, Portugal and Germany.

According to author Laura Sanders, Albania’s real beauty lies in the Accursed Mountains, despite the country’s growing popularity as a coastal destination. Valleys surrounded by farms, high pastures and largely untouched forests create a spectacular landscape. Mountainous areas account for about 75% of Albania’s territory.

Sanders recommends exploring the region through hiking, cycling and driving to experience its natural environment and local life. She also warns that Albania’s challenge will be preserving the area’s wild and natural character as tourism grows. The Independent’s 2026 selection also includes the French Alps, Madeira’s Levada trails, Belleville Valley, Bavaria, the Estrela Mountains and the mountains around Annecy.
