Voskopoja churches’frescoes, an invitation for tourists

Voskopoja is renowned for its centuries-old civilization, stunning landscape, churches, and numerous frescoes, all of which encapsulate a precious cultural heritage. Once a hub of economic, cultural, and artistic development teeming with prosperity, it thrived alongside other significant centers of trade in Albania, the Balkans, and beyond.

The Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage in Korçë presents a collection of photographs featuring frescoes from Voskopoja’s churches.

The architecture of the churches has stood the test of time, wars, and human-induced damage, serving as unique witnesses to the civilization’s values. Out of the 22 former churches, five still stand in Voskopoja: the Church of St. Athanasius, the Cathedral Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, the Church of the Archangels Gabriel and Michael, the Church of St. Nicholas, and the Monastery of St. Prodhromos.

Voskopoja showed a particular interest in the development of Byzantine language, culture, and art of the time, and over the years, it developed and continued to preserve the customs, history, and traditions established over time. A distinguishing element is the craftsmanship based on local expertise and natural resources, especially in woodwork, weaving of coarse garments, and many other valuable works.

These architectural and cultural values make the village of Voskopoja one of the most captivating destinations for both domestic and international tourists.
