Today, the Minister of Economy, Culture, and Innovation, Blendi Gonxhja, shared a video on social media showcasing the significant conservation and restoration work being carried out at the Laboratory of the Museum Center in Berat, focusing on iconographic art.

Minister Gonxhja wrote, “Not only do we focus on exhibition and promotion, but also on conservation and restoration. The artistic masterpieces housed and exhibited in the “Onufri” Iconographic Museum undergo meticulous conservation and restoration processes at the Laboratory near the Museum Center in Berat. Our aim is to restore them to their original state while preserving their age, interventions over the years, and the patina of time.”

Over the years, the Berat Museum Center has experienced a steady rise in visitor numbers, solidifying its position as one of the city’s primary attractions. The Iconography Museum “Onufri” stands out as the pioneer in utilizing technology for the discovery of national cultural treasures. Through innovative methods, the museum showcases its masterpieces in four languages: Albanian, English, Italian, and German, providing comprehensive insights into its rich collection.

The museum’s collection comprises 200 carefully selected objects sourced from churches and monasteries across the Berat district. Predominantly consisting of icons and a selection of liturgical objects, these artifacts date from the 14th century to the early 20th century, offering a comprehensive glimpse into the region’s rich cultural and religious heritage.

Among the remarkable works housed in this museum is the iconostasis of the Dormition of St. Mary’s Cathedral, considered one of the finest creations by Albanian craftsmen. Additionally, the museum is home to the purple codices, recognized and protected by UNESCO for their cultural significance.
