EU Ambassador to Albania Sofia Moreira de Sousa said Albania must continue reforms and secure irreversible results on its path towards European Union membership. Speaking at the 22nd EU-Albania Parliamentary Stabilisation and Association Committee meeting, she stressed the importance of parliamentary oversight, transparency and public consultation in drafting and adopting laws. Moreira de Sousa said Albania has made progress but still has work to do. She called for continued consolidation of justice reform and safeguards for the standards and results already achieved. The ambassador also praised Albania’s progress on human rights.

Meanwhile, Moreira de Sousa said the pace of reforms must not undermine transparency or parliamentary oversight. She said lawmakers must make legislation public and conduct meaningful consultations before adoption. According to the ambassador, laws must meet technical standards and address citizens’ needs.
In addition, Moreira de Sousa said EU-related reforms affect all areas of life, from environmental management to education. She called for the involvement of all parts of society, including civil society and the private sector. The ambassador said Parliament has a key role in ensuring a transparent process. She described a transparent parliament as an important pillar of a healthy democracy.
