Calendar – February 2

-On February 2, 1924, “People’s Artist”, the knight of the Albanian stage, Sulejman Pitarka, one of the greatest Albanian actors of the second half of the 20th century, was born in Dibër. He has played 71 roles in the National Theater and over 20 roles in movies. He entered the history of Albanian drama as the author of the play “The Fisherman’s Family”. In 1927, when he was three years old, his family settled in Durrës, where he spent his childhood. Some stage experiences, almost accidental, during the military service (1945-1947) led him to be more interested in the theater and to get involved in the amateur movement of Durrës. In 1951, he was selected to join the troupe, still in formation, of the People’s Theater (today the National). “Wooden plate” was the last drama that he could play for the Albanian art lovers. Sulejman Pitarka passed away on March 24, 2007.
-On February 2, 1981, in a private audience, Pope John Paul II received the Bishop of Kosova, Monsignor Nikë Prela. Pope Voitila told the Kosovan clergyman that: “…after the Polish people, I love the Albanian people the most, because, firstly, you have suffered too long and unjustly, and secondly, because you have given us Mother Teresa”.
-On February 2, 1990, the Blood Feud Reconciliation campaign started in Kosova. It was initiated by Prof. Anton Çeta, as a call for unity among Albanians.
