Tirana to build Albania’s first underground power substation

Albania’s Electricity Distribution Operator has signed a contract to build a new underground power substation in central Tirana. The facility will have an installed capacity of 200 megavolt-amperes and three underground floors. The project will be the first of its kind in Albania and the Balkan region.
The operator’s administrator, Mentor Hima, signed the implementation contract with Croatian company Dalekovod. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is financing the project through a loan.
The contract is worth around €20 million. Construction will take 22 months from the start of work. More than 40,000 electricity customers will benefit from the new substation.
The facility will include four transformers with a capacity of 50 megavolt-amperes each, three 110-kilovolt cable lines and 24 outgoing 20-kilovolt feeders. The project aims to modernize Tirana’s electricity distribution network, improve supply security and reliability, and reduce technical losses and carbon dioxide emissions.
The loan agreement dates to March 27, 2026, and took effect on September 25.
