North Macedonia Wins Tokyo International Film Festival Grand Prix, Mančevski Takes Top Award

North Macedonian director Milcho Manchevski has won the Tokyo Grand Prix at the 39th Tokyo International Film Festival for his film “Sister Brother Manhole Cover”. The award was announced on November 4.
The film is an international co-production involving North Macedonia, Albania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Italy and the United Kingdom, with Albania represented by the Tirana Film Institute.
Described as a black comedy, the film follows Malina and Viktor, a brother and sister struggling to survive on the margins of Macedonian society. They steal bronze busts and manhole covers to make ends meet until they encounter a wealthy, blind elderly woman. Their relationship with her forces them to confront questions of morality, loyalty and family commitment.
Sara Klimoska and Filip Trajkovikj star in the leading roles, alongside Sonja Mihajlova. Jane Kortoshev serves as the film’s producer.
Founded in 1985, the Tokyo International Film Festival is one of Asia’s leading cinematic events, bringing together productions from around the world and showcasing emerging voices in international cinema.
Manchevski gained international recognition with “Before the Rain”, which won the Golden Lion and FIPRESCI Prize at the Venice Film Festival and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. His other works include “Dust”, “Mothers” and “Willow”. He returns to Tokyo with his latest film following the world premiere of “Kaymak” in the festival’s official competition.
