Albania, 65 years in UNESCO

The relations of Albania with UNESCO are long-lasting and productive. Since the Albanian membership in this organization on October 16, 1958, the spirit of cooperation has been constant and focused in all four areas of the Organization’s activity, namely education, science, culture and communication.Today is the 65 anniversary of Albania’s membership in UNESCO.

The General Directorate of Archives (GDA) as the institution of administration, maintenance and exploitation of the nation’s documentary heritage, owns the two well-known manuscripts, Beratinus 1 and 2, which became part of the Memory of the World Register in 2005.

The Purple Codex of Berat dates back to the 6th century and is written on purple parchment. Meanwhile, the Golden Codex (Codex Aureus) belongs to the 9th century and is written on parchment with gold letters. The other six Albanian properties that are part of the UNESCO World Heritage are: Lake Ohrid, Gashi River, Rrajca, Berat, Butrinti and Gjirokastra.

UNESCO gathers around itself 193 member countries. The membership process is governed by Articles 2 and 15 of the organization’s Constitution and by Articles 98-101 of the General Conference’s Rules of Procedure, which define its governing policies.
