Margariti: The archaeological excavations in the Basilica of Elbasan restarted

Archaeological excavations have started again in the paleo-Christian Extra Muros basilica in the center of the city of Elbasan, bringing to light not only objects, but also new facts.
The Minister of Culture, Elva Margariti, shared today on social networks moments from this process, which is being carried out by the Institute of Archaeology, under the direction of archaeologist Elio Hobdari and where students from the Archeology branch of the University of Tirana are also involved.
Margariti announced that the excavations will take place in two phases, where the first will continue until the middle of July and then the second phase will start again at the beginning of September.
“The first phase is focused on several burial sites in the premises of the basilica, which are being excavated and documented, while new architectural elements such as capitals, parts of columns, etc. have been discovered,” she added.
