A theater performance to preserve the language of the ancestors

In Frascineto, a province inhabited by the old Albanian community in Italy, Albanian language has become a protagonist in the theater stage with the work “A Ring for the Bride”.

The cultural association Vorea, which organized, based on the work of Vincenzo Bruno, sees this not only as a theatrical spectacle but as an instrument for the promotion of culture, identity and memory. “The goal is to preserve and pass on the tradition of the language of the fathers,” says the local newspaper “L’eco dello Ionio” /The Ionian Echo/, about this cultural event. The first show sold out all the tickets in record time, which promises that this venture of the Frascineto Arbëresh community will be successful.

“The essence of these events lies in the values they express. For us, it is essential to advance this intangible heritage that has been passed down by voice and writing, which is the language of our ancestors,” declared the mayor of Frascineto, a town known as Frasnita in the Arbëresh language.

The head of the Vorea cultural association, Lucia Martino brought together Arbëresh of all ages in the theatrical work “A Ring for the Bride”, which raises values such as society, culture and the protection of origins. All these together, according to Martino have a common denominator, which is being part of a community, while keeping up with the time but with roots deeply embedded in its past.
