On May 27, 1280, with the intensification of the war between the Angevins and Byzantium in the territory of Albania, Charles I D’Anjou orders the start of the renovation of the castle of Durrës.

On May 27, 1927, the Albanian authorities arrested the Yugoslav citizen Vuko Gjyraskovic for espionage. This incident soured the relations between the two countries. Belgrade severed relations with official Tirana. It took the intervention of English, French and Italian diplomacy to restore relations.

On May 27, 1928, the sailors from Durrës went on strike and demanded an increase in salaries and improved working conditions. The strike lasted 6 days and ended with the fulfillment of the workers’ demands.

On May 27, 1941, the 21-year-old Vasil Laçi, Hero of the People, who 10 days before shot Viktor Emanuele III of Italy, was hanged in Tirana, on the road to Durrës. The assassination of Vasil Laçi was a spark that ignited the great anti-fascist uprising of Albanian people.

On May 27, 1946, the Law on Agrarian Reform was promulgated and a year later the corresponding annex. From this reform, 288,400 hectares of land were re-distributed and expropriation was done without compensation.

On May 27, 1952, movie director Spartak Pecani was born. His first feature film was “Streha e re” /The New Shelter/ which was released in 1977. He became known with the films “Kohë e Largët” /Distant Time/ and “Të mos heshtësh” /Speak up/. While the his movies “Shirat e Vjeshtës” /Autumn rains/ and “Treni niset në 7 pa 5” /The train leaves at 5 to 7/ won the awards of the 6th and 7th Albanian Artistic Movie Festival.

On May 27, 1982, the democratic patriot, writer, translator and popular lecturer Skënder Luarasi passed away. He is the author of many books such as “Dawn of Freedom”, “Colonel Tomson”, “Migjeni”, “Isa Boletini”, “Ismail Qemali”. Skender Luarasi gave Albanian readers in their native language some of the masterpieces of world literature, including those of Shakespeare and Schiller.

On May 27, 1997, the “Association of Albanian Education Veterans” was founded in Kosova.
